St Johnstone striker Paddy Connolly is likely to miss the entire season with a knee injury.
The 33-year-old needs cruciate ligament surgery after a training ground accident and now faces a battle to save his Saints career.
Connolly, who scored six goals last season, is in the final year of his contract at McDiarmid Park.
"I'm gutted by this and you have to feel for Paddy," St Johnstone boss Billy Stark told the Scottish Sun.
"We haven't put a timescale on it, but it has to be long-term."
