Gough inspires re-signed Kane
Paul Kane returned to Scotland from Iceland

Paul Kane is taking inspiration from Richard Gough and Stuart Pearce after being given a new, one-year contract by St Johnstone.

The former Aberdeen and Hibernian midfielder will be 36 by the start of the new season but has seen Gough and Pearce go on much longer before thinking of retiring.

Kane joined Saints in 1997 from Norwegian club Viking Stavanger and believes he will have the legs to last another year in Scotland's Premier League.

"I was never a player who relied on pace, so another birthday will not make any difference," Kane told the SPL website.

Spark is there

"I am delighted to get another contract and I intend to make sure a lot of the kids in the dressing-room do my running for me.

"I look at guys like Gough and Pearce, who are playing regularly in the English Premiership at 39.

"It is enthusiasm for the game which drives me on and, as long as that spark is there, I will continue."

St Johnstone manager Sandy Clark is hoping to re-sign strikers Nathan Lowndes and Paddy Connolly, although Lowndes is a target for Aberdeen.
