Defender Graham Coughlan has signed a new two-year contract at League Two side Southend United.

The 36-year-old will combine his playing role with coaching and will continue to manage the reserve team.

Coughlan, who joined the Blues last summer from Shrewsbury, played 30 times in the 2010/11 season.

Manager Paul Sturrock said: "The squad respects him, and his assistance on the training ground in the second half of the season was first class."

He added: "I think he will be the first to admit that at 36 he played more times last season than perhaps he was expecting.

"But he was still putting in consistent performances and his experience is invaluable to those younger players around him."
