Southend United suffer 'painful' monthly losses

Southend United are losing £100,000 a month according to the club's chief executive Tara Brady.

During a phone-in on BBC Essex, Brady, alongside manager Paul Sturrock, admitted the figure was "painful".

"In terms of profit and loss for last year I think we've just concluded the accounts, let's wait until they come out and they're audited," he said.

"But the cash flow situation at the moment is we're losing £100,000 a month. It's painful maths to be fair."

The Shrimpers fended off administration and a winding-up order last year and have since made thorough cuts in the players and staff wage bill.

But Brady insisted plans to move to a new stadium at Fossetts Farm, which have been in the pipeline for several years, were ongoing.

"We are close to concluding all aspects of the ground so we can get going on the building," he said.

"There are seven shops that we still have to take over, there's a compulsory purchase order.

"The council have been excellent in supporting us, but these things just take a little bit of time.

"I don't see it being an issue, we have got contingencies if that's the case."

And Sturrock revealed that despite the club's financial situation, he is not ready to cash in on midfielder Anthony Grant.

The 23-year-old has found the net six times in 28 games this term.

"We've had no offers for Anthony so far this season," said Sturrock.

"He's played very well for me, I'm very pleased with his approach to the game.

"We changed his style of play this year and he's got about the goals.

"It would need a big offer for us to be in anyway interested in moving him on at this time of the season.

"He's never knocked on my door and said he wants to get away, he's never looked to me in any way other than positively."
