Southend United chairman Ron Martin backs Steve Tilson

Ron Martin
Martin confirmed Southend players' wages have now been paid

Southend United chairman Ron Martin has given his backing to Blues manager Steve Tilson.

Their 1-0 defeat by Brighton leaves Tilson's side seven points from safety in League One with three games left.

Martin told BBC Essex Sport: "We have been through a difficult time but there has been no talk of him leaving.

"I've spoken to him recently about a new contract. I know he's committed to the future of Southend, I'd like to keep him here."

The Blues chairman also confirmed that the club is up-to-date with payments to all of the players, following financial difficulty throughout the season.

Martin added: "These are not lowly-paid players, they've always been paid and they've always known that the money would be coming.

"Whilst they may not have had precise dates, there's always been assurance that they would be paid and no-one would be let down.

"I know it wouldn't affect me if I was a player, I think you have to consider all that we've been doing to keep this club alive."
