Scannell injury blow for Southend

Southend midfielder Damian Scannell is set to miss the opening match of the League One season against Huddersfield.

The winger, 24, picked up an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge last weekend.

It was Scannell's first appearance of the pre-season after missing the Blues' other friendlies with a knee problem.

Manager Steve Tilson told the club's website: "It's really swollen up, I would be amazed if he was fit for our first game against Huddersfield."

Meanwhile, Southend have allowed trialist Andrew Pearson to return to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Centre-backs Harry Worley (Leicester) and Brian Saah (ex-Leyton Orient) will get another chance at a pre-season friendly with Barnet on Tuesday.

Tilson has yet to make a decision on whether to pursue his interest in former Blackburn striker Maceo Rigters.
