Southend have signed striker Freddy Eastwood on loan from Conference South side Grays Athletic.
Eastwood joined West Ham as a trainee in preference to Southend
The 19-year-old marksman scored 37 goals for Grays last season.
Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson told his club's website: "We had Freddy as a youth player and we offered him a scholarship, but he went to West Ham.
"He played for Swindon reserves last week - there are a few clubs after him. He can score goals but it is a question of whether he can at this level."
Eastwood also spent time on trial at Charlton last season.
Tilson was keen to strengthen his front line after losing Lawrie Dudfield and Drewe Broughton to injury.
