Taylor's Southend U-turn
Former Southend and Leicester manager Peter Taylor
Peter Taylor was sacked by Southend in 1997
Peter Taylor has put his return to football on hold after doing a U-turn and opting not to stage a series of coaching sessions with his home-town club Southend United.

Taylor, who was sacked as manager of Leicester City last week, had been asked to help out by David Webb at the Third Division club.

But the former England caretaker coach, who had a previous spell as manager with Southend, has shelved plans after Webb quit at Roots Hall on Tuesday.

It was Dave Webb who asked me to help him out, and now he has left the club

On Wednesday Taylor was clearing out his house near Leicester after being relieved of his duties at Filbert Street after 15 months in charge.

Dave Bassett is set to be named as his successor in the next couple of days.

Taylor said: "I am now not going to do the coaching at Southend.

"Yes, it would have taken my mind off things after what happened and I have faith in my ability.

"But it was Dave Webb who asked me to help him out and, now he has left the club, the agreement does not come into force.

"In any case, since I said I would help out and since David has left, I have had people linking me with the manager's job and all sorts of things."

Taylor is keen to make a return to club management and he has already vowed to prove Leicester wrong for getting rid of him.

Former Southend defender and current assistant-manager Rob Newman is in temporary charge of first team affairs.

He has already stated that he would accept the job full-time if it was offered to him.
