Kelvin Davis signs new Southampton contract

Kelvin Davis has signed a new contract with Southampton that will keep him at St Mary's until 2014.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper's previous deal was due to run out at the end of the forthcoming season.

Club skipper Davis passed the 200-appearance mark for Saints last season and set a new clean sheet record.

Saints are also monitoring the fitness of striker Alex Chamberlain who suffered an ankle injury against West Brom on Wednesday.

He has a lot of strengths, not only as a goalkeeper, but as club captain too

Davis follows Rickie Lambert, Lee Barnard, David Connolly, Radhi Jaidi, Dan Harding and Aaron Martin in extending his stay with Southampton this summer.

He told the club website: "I've never made it any secret that I want to play my football here and in the last five years I've had some interesting times.

"Certainly the last two years have been very positive, so to sign a new contract that keeps me going here means that I'm delighted.

"We're looking forward to making the next two or three years my best yet."

Boss Nigel Adkins said: "He has a lot of strengths, not only as a goalkeeper, but as club captain too, where his great leadership skills and personality come to the fore."

Began his career with Luton
Joined Wimbledon in 1999 for £600,000
Free transfer took him to Ipswich in 2003
Joined Sunderland for £1.25m in 2005

But as Saints tied up Davis's future they were assessing the fitness of 17-year-old Chamberlain who was forced out of Wednesday's game during the first half.

Adkins told BBC Radio Solent: "We'll take all the right precautions with Alex, because he's a very important player for us."

Chamberlain has been continually linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, but Adkins says nothing has changed and that he expects the teenager to remain a Southampton player.

He said: "The speculation has been going on for a while, and we can't do anything about it.

"But he's put in some great performances in pre-season. Alex is very professional in what he does, and that will continue."
