Svensson extends Saints contract

Michael Svensson

Michael Svensson has agreed a new deal at Southampton, while also being appointed the club's new captain.

The centre-half, 33, has suffered three years of injury, but has made a remarkable comeback in pre-season.

"I've been out for many years, and had five operations," Svensson told BBC Radio Solent. "The knee feels good having played a couple of friendlies.

"I'm delighted and honoured to be the captain of the team, and I cannot wait to play a competitive game again."

He added: "I had no doubt that I would make it back. I just tried to remain positive throughout, and it feels fantastic to be pulling a Saints shirt on again."

Svensson's last competitive appearance for Southampton was in a 1-1 draw at Hull, on 22 November 2005.

Meanwhile Polish striker Marek Sagnowski has joined Danish Superliga side Aalborg BK on loan until 31 December.
