Cardiff 2-1 Southampton

Roger Johnson scored a controversial last-gasp winner for Cardiff City against Southampton in their final opening day game at Ninian Park.

Centre-back Johnson's 90th minute header for the FA Cup finalists ensured the sell-out crowd left happy.

Transfer-listed striker Steve Thompson had fired Cardiff into the lead after Gavin Rae's shot had been blocked.

But David McGoldrick levelled just minutes later on the stroke of half-time before Johnson struck.

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones:
"We can do better as we weren't fluent today. We enjoyed one or two good link-ups but too many players didn't perform to their capabilities.

"I was glad Steve scored but to let them equalise straight away was bad defending on our part because why we were trying to take a quick free-kick with half-time so close, I just don't know.

"However the boys stayed strong and showed great character to win the game.

"We kept a lot of pressure on Southampton and Roger is always dangerous at set-pieces as we work at it day in, day out.

"Southampton disputed the goal, however they were not questioning whether it was over the line or not because it was a good foot over.

"They thought Joe Ledley had thrown the ball in but he was just throwing it to Mark Kennedy to throw it in. The goal, though, came from corner that followed. I always tell my teams to play to the whistle, which is something they didn't do and they were punished."

Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet:
"Both sides would have been happy with a point but we should have cleared the ball long before they scored their winner.

"I was satisfied with the first half, particularly the opening 30 minutes, but then Cardiff came into it and they worked very hard.

"I am disappointed because we came so close to getting a point. It's a shame that in the last minute you concede a goal because you need to mark for the full 90 minutes.

"You have to concentrate and we gave away a free kick that was not necessary."
