Crouch scored 16 goals in 36 appearances for Southampton
Southampton will benefit financially if Liverpool striker Peter Crouch moves back to south coast rivals Portsmouth.
Crouch, 27, who previously played for Pompey in 2001/02, was sold by Saints to Liverpool for £7m in July 2005.
Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe has confirmed to BBC Radio Solent that a sell-on clause was negotiated at the time of the England forward's sale.
It means that Saints will get a percentage of any profit that could amount to around £500,000.
It is understood that Crouch's move to Fratton Park is unlikely to go ahead until the end of this week, with Pompey set to make an initial payment of £8-9m.
Add-ons over the duration of the striker's contract at Fratton Park could see the eventual fee rise to about £11m.
