Southampton striker David McGoldrick was on his way out of the Championship club at the end of the January transfer window, reports BBC Radio Solent.
The 20-year-old has been frustrated by a lack of opportunities at St Mary's, but his move was scrapped when forward Grzegorz Rasiak joined Bolton on loan.
McGoldrick said: "Greg going has given me a chance here. It's a make-or-break time for me at the club. "
Eighteenth-placed Saints host Plymouth on Tuesday at St Mary's.
McGoldrick spent a loan spell with League One strugglers Port Vale earlier this season, and also had a period with Bournemouth last season.
Rasiak's departure on loan to Bolton has left Saints with four recognised strikers. McGoldrick has found himself behind Stern John, Marek Saganowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips in the pecking order.
There is full match commentary of the game on BBC Radio Solent, 96.1 FM, from 1945 GMT on Tuesday.
