New Southampton manager Harry Redknapp was left cursing after Middlesbrough scored two last-gasp goals to draw.
Southampton were two up with a minute to go but had to settle for a point.
Redknapp said: "It feels like a defeat. It was game over, then we threw away two crucial points. It was a bizarre finish and we are so disappointed.
"Our game plan worked, but that's what happens when you're nervous and you are in the position we are in. Sometimes you feel you won't win games."
Redknapp confirmed he will be talking to his former Pompey assistant Jim Smith to try to sort out a role for him at St Mary's.
"I'd like to bring Jim in," he said.
"He's on holiday in Dubai at the moment - where I was also going on Monday before I got this offer of a job at Southampton. Jim's got experience and is a
good man to talk to."
