Strachan is December's man
Southampton manager Gordon Strachan
Gordon Strachan is December's manager of the month
Southampton manager Gordon Strachan has been named Barclaycard Premiership manager of the month for December.

During December, Saints won three and drew two of their five games, part of an eight-match unbeaten run.

The canny Scot has guided Saints to sixth spot, their highest-ever placing since the foundation of the Premiership.

They are in their best ever Premiership position, largely due the commitment, experience and knowledge of Gordon Strachan

Barclaycard awards panel

It is Strachan's second manager of the month award at Southampton, having scooped the prize in January 2002.

Strachan also won the award twice during his five-year spell as Coventry manager.

The former Scotland international joked that he would be reluctant to accept the award, given its past record for putting a jinx on winners.

"It should go to Alan Curbishley, he has done a much better job at Charlton than I have done," joked Strachan.

The award panel, made up of representatives from football's governing bodies, supporters and members of the media, was fulsome in its praise for Strachan's efforts at the St Mary's stadium.

The panel said: "These truly are great times for the St Mary's faithful.

"They are sixth in the league, their best ever Premiership position. This is largely due to the commitment, experience and knowledge of manager Gordon Strachan.

"His side are currently on an eight match unbeaten run and with players like James Beattie and Wayne Bridge doing so well, it looks likely to continue."
