Beattie bags award
Southampton striker James Beattie
James Beattie is flying at the moment
BBC Sport Online columnist James Beattie has been named Barclaycard Premiership player of the month for November.

Southampton striker Beattie continuted a red-hot scoring streak in November, which began in October and has continued through to December.

Beattie's run has made the former England Under-21 international the joint top Premiership marskman, alongside Thierry Henry, Gianfranco Zola and Alan Shearer.

A brace against Arsenal, one apiece against Newcastle and Blackburn, and the late winner in the match against West Ham took Beattie's tally to nine goals in seven Premiership games.

The award is not Beattie's first.

He scooped the November 2000 player of the month prize for a similar goalscoring run.

However, Beattie is not getting carried away by talk of international call-ups.

Beattie told Sport Online: "It's always nice when a prize like this comes along.

"It's recognition for your efforts and tells you that people appreciate what you're doing.

Of course, any player wants to play for his country but I'll let other people talk about that

"But I won't start talking about international call-ups and things like that.

"Of course, any player wants to play for his country.

"But I'll let other people talk about that.

"Sven-Goran Eriksson picks the team and his is the only opinion that really counts.

"I'll do my talking on the pitch by continuing to score goals and if that's good enough to get me a call-up, fine."
