Shrewsbury striker James Collins has targeted winning his first cap with the full Republic of Ireland side.

Collins is currently with the Irish Under-21 squad for their latest round of Uefa Championship qualifiers.

"It's a fantastic experience and my real dream is to play in the World Cup," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"The seniors have some great strikers like Robbie Keane, but they're coming to the end of their careers and I'd love to be in the frame in the future."

Collins was born in Coventry, but qualifies through his Irish mother.

"Ireland asked me to play for them when I was at the youth team at Villa," he said. "I jumped at the chance - and it's gone right ever since.

"It's a great honour to play for Ireland. You're playing with the best Irish players, many who play in England, and it's always a good test for you."

Collins has scored twice for Shrewsbury this season - including the winner in Town's Carling Cup win at Championship side Derby.

"Promotion with Shrewsbury is my biggest goal, but playing for the club and scoring goals will help my international side as well," he added.
