Shrewsbury sign Sean McAllister & goalkeeper Ben Smith

Shrewsbury Town have signed former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean McAllister and ex-Doncaster goalkeeper Ben Smith on two-year deals.

"McAllister's an attacking, exciting player and I'm a bit surprised he was still on the market," Town boss Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We were a little short in midfield and with his Championship experience he could be a real gain for us.

"And Smith impressed us enough pre-season to earn himself a contract."

McAllister, 23, joined the Owls Academy from Bolton in 2006, when he was named their Young Player of the Year.

He made 68 first-team appearances but was loaned to Mansfield and Bury, before being released this summer.

Smith, also 23, started as a youth player at Newcastle, but made his senior debut for Doncaster in October 2006.

He became their first-choice keeper before losing his place to Neil Sullivan, and more recently had loan spells at Lincoln and Morecambe, before Doncaster let him go at the end of last season.

He was invited for pre-season training by Shrewsbury and played during their friendly tour to Devon.

McAllister and Smith are Turner's latest in a flurry of signings, and the Town manager indicates there could be at least one more before the start of the League Two campaign on 7 August.
