Shrews hope Fifa clear Riza deal

Omer Riza
Riza left English football for Turkey almost six years ago

Shrewsbury Town are hoping for a Fifa decision before the end of April as to whether they can sign former Arsenal trainee Omer Riza.

The 29-year-old Londoner cannot play football anywhere after being banned by the Turkish Football Federation for walking out on Trabzonspor.

Riza has said he had not been paid, while the club stated he left after falling out with their manager.

The TFF submitted a case to Fifa this week, and a judgement is expected soon.

Riza was picked up by Arsenal as a youngster, where he made one appearance as a substitute in a Carling Cup tie.

He then moved to West Ham without breaking into the first team, but started scoring in the lower levels of the Football League with Barnet and then Cambridge.

His goals at Cambridge sparked a move to Turkish first division side Denizlispor, before he was transferred to Trabzonspor.

Following his ban, he returned to England, and arrived for a trial at Shrewsbury in February - impressing manager Paul Simpson. But with the ban still in force, he could not play in official fixtures for the club.

He scored for Town's reserve side in a recent friendly with Wolves.
