Shrews loan can boost Saints ace

Jamie White
Jamie White made his league debut for Southampton in August

On-loan striker Jamie White has pledged to learn from Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson as he hopes to enhance his first-team chances at Southampton.

"Simpson was a striker himself, and he knows his football after his own playing career," the 19-year-old told BBC Radio Shropshire.

White has played three times for Southampton's first team this season, but wants to become more of a regular.

"My month at Shrewsbury will definitely stand me in good stead," added White.

White made his Shrewsbury debut at Saltergate as a second-half substitute in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Chesterfield.

He came on straight after the Spireites had pulled one back, and just four minutes before they equalised.

But, despite that uncomfortable start to his Town career, he has come on good recommendation to Simpson.

"Not only has he got pace, he's also got versatility," said Simpson. "He can play up front, out wide or in midfield."

Hailing from Southampton, White is a lifelong Saints supporter who described signing for the club as "a dream come true."

But he did not dismiss the thought of an extended loan at Shrewsbury - if it would help further his Saints career.
