Sheffield Wednesday striker Marcus Tudgay has agreed a new three-year contract which will keep him at Hillsborough until the summer of 2012.

The Owls have moved quickly to secure the services of the 25-year-old, who scored 14 goals last season.

Tudgay, who began his career at Derby County, is Sheffield Wednesday's player of the year.

The new contract will be officially signed when he returns from holiday at the end of the month.

Tudgay's deal follows the announcement that the Owls have signed the former Cardiff City defender Darren Purse on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old was a promotion winner with Birmingham City in 2002 and has three years of experience in the Premier League.

However, Purse told BBC Sport Wales on Monday that he has yet to put pen to paper on a contract, although the centre back remains hopeful of completing the deal.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws told Radio Sheffield: "We are delighted to make the signing of Darren Purse.

"It's been important work that we've been doing behind the scenes to find the best possible players who are coming out of contract.

"We've secured not only a great leader, but a player who knows how to win games and show a great example to our young players. The benefit we'll get from him being in the team will be enormous."

Laws also added that more could soon follow: "We've done a lot of homework on a lot of players and we are hoping to secure another player, with experience, in the not too distant future."
