Sheffield United end interest in Charlie Mulgrew

Sheffield United have ended their interest in former Aberdeen wing-back Charlie Mulgrew, who now appears to be on his way to Celtic.

Mulgrew, 24, is available on a free, but the Blades pulled out of a move because of the player's wage demands.

"Charlie Mulgrew is one we did speak to. We couldn't agree terms, so we move on," said Blades boss Kevin Blackwell.

"Players these days think they can come in and play for x, y and z. We need a bit of realism."

Mulgrew, who rejected a new Dons contract, is now expected to become Neil Lennon's first summer signing at Celtic Park in the next 48 hours.

It would be Mulgrew's second spell with the Bhoys, after he left in the summer of 2006 as part of a swap deal with Wolves for Lee Naylor.

The former Scotland Under-21 international had failed to make the breakthrough into Celtic's first-team but impressed while on loan to Scottish Premier League rivals Dundee United.

Mulgrew made only nine first-team appearances for Wolves and had a loan spell with Southend before joining Aberdeen for £150,000 in 2008.

He has since played more than 80 times for the SPL club and had appeared to have a preference for a return to English football until reports of interest from Celtic.
