Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny's appeal against a nine-month ban for failing a drugs test has been dismissed by the Football Association.

The 31-year-old challenged the severity of the suspension, but has failed to have it reduced.

An FA statement said: "The decision to impose a nine-month suspension was an appropriate measure."

Kenny tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine after last season's Championship play-off tie with Preston.

The suspension dates back to 22 July, meaning that Kenny can return to action in April 2010.

In addition to the ban, the Republic of Ireland international will the subject of target testing for a period of two years.

Kenny has made nearly 300 appearances for the Blades since moving to Bramall Lane from Bury in 2002.
