Championship strugglers Scunthorpe United have signed Leeds defender Andy Hughes on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old, whose Leeds contract was going to expire this summer, has signed an 18-month deal with the option of a further year.

"When I first took over [as manager] I wanted to bring in a couple of experienced players," Iron manager Ian Baraclough told BBC Radio Humberside.

"Andy fits the bill perfectly. It's been ongoing for quite a while."

He added: "I knew he was coming to the end of his contract and there was a possibility that Leeds wouldn't renew it."

The former Oldham trainee has made 139 appearances for Simon Grayson's side since joining from Norwich in August 2007.

He was part of the Leeds team that lost the League One play-off final to Doncaster in 2008.

Hughes has also had spells at Notts County and Reading and Baraclough says he has long been an admirer of his abilities.

"I knew Andy when he was a young lad at Notts County when I played there and straight away he just hits you with his professionalism and his will to win," he said.

"He's a good player in his own right but what he brings off the pitch as well is leadership, experience and enthusiasm.

"He's such a bubbly character, positive and I think he'll fit right into the dressing room.
