Preston's Hayes refuses to rule out Scunthorpe return

Former Scunthorpe United striker Paul Hayes has refused to rule out returning for a third spell in January.

The 27-year-old Preston forward left to sign a three-year-deal at Deepdale last summer, but fell out of favour and is currently on-loan at Barnsley.

"You never know in football, you can't predict anything," Hayes told BBC Radio Humberside. "You can't rule anything out but you can't rule anything in.

"I need to speak to Darren Ferguson [Preston boss] and see what he wants."

The Dagenham-born forward has not played for Preston since facing the Iron in their 3-2 home defeat on 19 October.

Hayes joined Barnsley on loan at the end of October and is due to return to Preston at the start of January, when he will discuss his future.

The striker insists there has been no official approach from Scunthorpe to take him back to Glanford Park.

"He [boss Ian Baraclough] hasn't said anything in those terms [about coming back].

"I have spoken a couple of times but that's as far as it has got."

Earlier this week, Baraclough said he would be interested if the player was available.
