Scunthorpe United have named Ian Baraclough as their new manager.

The 39-year-old, who was previously first-team coach at Glanford Park, has been in caretaker charge since Nigel Adkins left for Southampton.

Kevin Pressman has stepped up from his role as goalkeeping coach to become Baraclough's assistant.

Scunthorpe, who currently lie 16th in the Championship, entertain Ipswich Town on Saturday in Baraclough's first game in permanent charge.

Iron chairman Steve Wharton told the club website: "He is an exceptionally nice person who I had pencilled in as a prospective manager some two years ago.

"I and my board will do our utmost to give Ian all the support he needs to continue and build upon our recent successes."

Baraclough, a midfielder as a player, joined United from Notts County in 2004, and was part of the team that rose from League Two to the Championship.

Iron were relegated from the Championship in 2008, but were promoted back to the second tier in 2009, after which Baraclough hung up his boots.

Adkins, the club's former physio, presided over both of United's promotions to the Championship and their intervening relegation, but was appointed as Southampton boss on 12 September.

Baraclough has been in charge since then, seeing Scunthorpe defeat Sheffield United 4-0 and lose 2-0 to Swansea.

He was also in control for Wednesday's 5-2 Carling Cup third round defeat by Manchester United, a game in which Scunthorpe took the lead.

Pressman, 42, joined the Iron as goalkeeping coach in the summer of 2007 after a playing career which included spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, West Brom and Leeds.
