Scunthorpe United set to give Jonathan Forte chance

Scunthorpe striker Jonathan Forte is set to be given the opportunity to fill one of the places vacated by Gary Hooper and Paul Hayes this season.

The 24-year-old has struggled to hold down a consistent starting role since joining from Sheffield United in 2007.

Iron manager Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside: "He's got an opportunity now and that opportunity rests with him."

Hooper has joined Celtic while Preston have signed Hayes.

Adkins has boosted the attacking options at Glanford Park with the signings of Rochdale striker Chris Dagnall and Bobby Grant from Accrington Stanley.

At 19 he was in the England set up and the elite leading scorer

But Forte, who has made 90 appearances since arriving in July 2007, is still part of his plans.

However, he is looking for him to increase a goals tally that currently stands at just seven.

Adkins said: "Jonathan's got all the attributes - strength, power and a good attitude.

"Consistency is what you always strive for. Maybe with not playing regularly you don't get that consistency

"At 19 he was in the England set-up and the elite leading scorer in his age group.

"For whatever reason he hasn't achieved the potential we would have liked him to achieve but he's now going to get that opportunity."

And Forte is determined to take that chance.

"I want to play week in, week out. The gaffer has said to me that if I'm playing well I'll keep my place," he said.
