Woolford joined York City from Frickley Athletic in 2006
York City winger Martyn Woolford has joined Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee.
A number of other clubs had also been interested in the 22-year-old, including Cheltenham Town.
Woolford has signed a three-year deal but an injury will prevent him from making his debut in the opening game of the season against Leeds.
"Martyn has joined Scunthorpe to further his ambitions," said York communication director Sophie Hicks.
"Martyn has been a great player and ambassador for York City.
"We felt it would not be right to stand in the way of his personal progress when he has so much talent and ability.
"Martyn's current contract was due to end next summer and we therefore felt it was best for the club to accept Scunthorpe's offer.
"The board will be ensuring a significant portion of the transfer fee is allocated to Colin Walker's playing budget to strengthen the team further now and during the season."
Hicks added: "Martyn has attracted a lot of interest pre-season. He was offered an extended contract by York City in June but did not sign it as he wished to keep his options open."
