Will Atkinson has declined the offer to extend his loan spell at Rotherham through to the end of the season.
The 22-year-old midfielder had been expected to agree a continuation to his deal from Hull City but has instead decided to join Rochdale.
Chief operating officer Paul Douglas told the club website: "We are disappointed that Will has had a last minute change of heart.
"He has decided to join Rochdale where he had a successful time last season".
Atkinson joined the Millers in November and has impressed in games against Aldershot, Port Vale and Macclesfield.
The left-sided player has previously had loan spells with Port Vale, Mansfield and Rochdale.
