Rotherham hope to sign former Yeovil and Crewe midfielder Gary Roberts.
The 22-year-old, released by the Glovers in September, is currently without a club and has been offered a deal by the Millers.
"He's only 22 but has real talent," Millers boss Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"He impressed us when he played for our reserves this week. He has a great range of passing. When he's up to full fitness he would be a great asset."
Roberts, who has admitted suffering from drink and gambling problems, recently visited the Sporting Chance Clinic as he tries to get his career back on track.
"People say he comes with baggage but his attitude has been first class. I think he deserves a second chance and I hope he takes up our offer," Moore said.
Meanwhile the Millers revealed they have failed in an attempt to sign Leeds United striker Enoch Showunmi.
