Hill's team have slipped four points adrift of League Two's top three
Rochdale boss Keith Hill is not concerned by two defeats in their last three league games.
Defeats at Exeter and Port Vale have left last season's beaten play-off finalists outside the top seven going into the new year.
Hill told BBC Radio Manchester: "I wouldn't say it's one step back. I would say it's very tight at the top of League Two.
"We are trying to take as many steps forward as we possibly can."
He added: "We've got a talented young squad and we want to add to that. We haven't got the financial resources of some of the other clubs in this league and we've got to be careful about how we overevaluate our current form or our current squad.
"We are in a very comfortable position in the league and we want to build on that as we want to build on last season but it's very difficult to do that.
"It's very difficult to achieve because there are 23 other teams in our league who are trying to compete and do the same thing."
