Reading have signed Hereford striker Mathieu Manset for an undisclosed fee, which could go on to exceed the Bulls' record sale of £440,000.

The French 21-year-old was going to be out of contract in the summer, meaning he could have left the club, although the Bulls would have been due a fee.

The former Le Havre forward joined the League Two side in 2009 and scored 18 goals in 59 games.

He has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship club.

Royals boss Brian McDermott told the club website: "Mathieu first came to our attention in May 2008 when we saw him playing for Le Havre against Lyon and we've tracked his development ever since.

"In the last few months his goalscoring record speaks for itself, there was lots of interest from Championship clubs and once again we're very lucky, pleased and excited he has joined us."

Hereford chairman David Keyte told the Bulls website: "I appreciate that some fans will be disappointed but Mathieu made it very clear to us this week that he didn't want to be with us and wanted to leave.

"There was no way he was going to sign a new contract at the end of the season which means he would have been free to go to another club and we would have been in the hands of a tribunal. It's a good deal for this club."
