Reading striker Shane Long has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2012.

Republic of Ireland international Long, 23, has scored 13 goals in this calendar year, more than any other member of the Royals squad.

Long told the club website: "This is my sixth season at the club and I've enjoyed every year here.

"It's nice that the manager [Brian McDermott] has shown some faith in me and offered me a new deal."

The former Cork forward has scored two goals this campaign, against Burnley and Crystal Palace.

He also scored crucial goals at the very highest level during our two seasons in the Premier League

Long added: "I've had ups and downs here but mostly ups since the manager has been here, but I was delighted to snap up the deal when I got the chance."

McDermott said: "I'm delighted Shane has committed to the club by signing a new contract with us.

"He was one of four strikers who helped us make history in 2005/06, playing a valuable part in the squad that earned promotion with 106 points.

"He also scored crucial goals at the very highest level during our two seasons in the Premier League."
