Gylfi Sigurdsson extends Reading contract

Sigurdsson hopes to receive his first full cap for Iceland this summer

Reading's attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has agreed a three-year deal with the Championship club.

The 20-year-old still has two years left on his contract but Reading have extended his terms by another 12 months to ward off interest from other clubs.

He was the Royals' top scorer this term, with 20 in all competitions and was named player of the season.

The Icelander made his Championship debut for the Royals this season and went on to make 44 appearances.

The Reading academy product enjoyed loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra in the 2008/9 season.

Club chairman Sir John Madejski told the club website: "This is a massive signing. Gylfi obviously has a great career ahead of him and it's made more satisfying by the fact he progressed through the academy."

Sigurdsson added: "Having been offered a new contract again I'd be stupid to go elsewhere.

"I've got myself into the team, I wouldn't want to play anywhere else."
