No damage from Matt Mills behaviour - Brian McDermott

Brian McDermott
McDermott said Mills' gesture would not detract from the win

Reading manager Brian McDermott says he is "absolutely certain" that Matt Mills' relationship with the crowd has had no lasting damage.

Mills appeared to make an offensive gesture towards home supporters during Reading's 1-0 win against Queen's Park Rangers on Tuesday night.

McDermott told BBC Berkshire: "This is a game of football, it's passionate. That's really what it's all about.

"The next home game we play they'll be chanting his name - I really hope so."

McDermott added that by the end of the game, it seemed that Mills had been forgiven.

"Matt Mills has been inspirational at the back at times - I thought he was terrific again but he was obviously disappointed," he said.

"Towards the end they're shouting his name. We've got a fantastic camaraderie between the players and the fans and we want to keep that going.

"We need the crowd, we really need them to keep onside, especially when it's 0-0 and they're down to 10 men.

"We need them to keep going and we'll keep going and get results like tonight.

"The bottom line is that we won a fantastic game of football, against really tough opposition one place above us in the league. That's what we've got to talk about."
