Reading have completed the signing of Chris Armstrong from Sheffield United for an initial 500,000 after he successfully passed a medical.

The fee for the 26-year-old left-back could rise to 800,000 depending on appearances and the club's success.

"Since the departure of Nicky Shorey we have been looking to supplement the left-hand side of our squad," said Royals manager Steve Coppell.

"The signing of Chris Armstrong has given the opportunity to do that."

Armstrong began his career at Bury and joined the Blades for 100,000 in 2003.

He is expected to make his debut against Crystal Palace at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Reading's Director of football Nicky Hammond added: "Chris is an experienced player who has made more than 200 senior appearances and competed in the top flight.

"We wish him the best of luck and are pleased to welcome him to the club."
