Reading boss Steve Coppell has revealed Moroccan midfielder Hassan Kachloul is having a trial at the Madejski Stadium.
The 32-year-old spent three years at Southampton before moving to Aston Villa and had trials with Bolton in the summer and Crystal Palace in September.
And Coppell told the Royals website: "He's got pedigree and is capable of playing at the top level - now it's a question of application and fitness.
"There's no timescale but we'll both know when it's right or wrong."
Kachloul is free to train with the Royals for as long as he wants as he is not contracted to a club.
And director of football Nick Hammond added: "He's been living in France keeping himself fit with a couple of clubs over there.
"He's training with us for a while and it's well worth having a look at players of that pedigree when they are available on a free."
