Royals swoop for Gordon
Dean Gordon
Reading have signed Coventry left-back Dean Gordon on loan until the end of the season as cover for Nicky Shorey.

A clause in the deal will prevent him playing when the two clubs meet on Saturday, so his debut is expected to be against West Ham on 3 April.

Royals boss Steve Coppell, who signed the 31-year-old at Crystal Palace, told the club website: "I hope he'll provide a good springboard for us to attack.

"He also plays in the centre of defence so he provides more cover there too."

Gordon made more than 200 appearances for the Eagles before a 900,000 transfer to Middlesbrough in the summer of 1998.

He spent four years with the Riverside Stadium club, making 63 Premiership appearances, and had a loan spell at Cardiff City in late 2001 before a free transfer to Coventry at the start of the 2002-03 season.

But Gordon's progress has been hampered by injury over the past few years, and he has made just seven first team appearances for the Sky Blues this season.

In total, he has made 323 career appearances, plus 38 as a substitute, scoring 30 goals.

He joins a growing list of Coppell's former players now at the Madejski Stadium.
