Royals swoop for Brown
Steve Brown
Reading have long been interested in Steve Brown

Reading have signed Charlton defender Steve Brown on a free transfer.

Last summer Reading manager Alan Pardew admitted his interest in the versatile Charlton defender.

But the deal was scuppered by financial constraints.

The 30-year-old, who would have been out of contract at The Valley in the summer, moves to the Madejski Stadium on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Brown can play in the centre of defence or at right-back, but also boasts something of a reputation as an emergency goalkeeper.

He has never conceded a goal on the four occasions he has been required to pull on the gloves.

Reading were keen to sign another centre back following the end of Matthew Upson's loan spell from Arsenal.

Pardew knows Brown from his own playing days with the Addicks and feels that his experience can help maintain the Royals' bid to win promotion to the Premiership.

Pardew said: "It's been well reported that I've been after Steve Brown for a long time, and there are good reasons for that.

"He covers a number of roles, but centre-back is probably his best position."

Brown has played more than 200 games for Charlton having joined the club as a trainee.

He is in line to make his debut in the clash against promotion rivals Nottingham Forest at The City Ground.
