Reading secure Upson deal
Matthew Upson (centre) helps Martin Keown hold off Juventus striker Nicola Amoruso in a Champions League clash
Upson (centre) and Martin Keown take on Juventus
Reading have signed Arsenal defender Matthew Upson on a three-month loan deal.

The highly-rated 23-year-old centre back is training with the Royals, and looks set for a debut against Rotherham on Saturday.

The Gunners' defender, who has played at Reading's Madejski Stadium for England Under 21s, said he was delighted to have completed the move.

Upson said: "I met the lads before we headed off to training and I`m very pleased to be here.

"It's a good club with a good foundation and I am looking forward to playing some matches," he told the club's official website.

Upson featured prominently in Arsenal's double winning campaign last season.

But he has fallen down the Highbury pecking order, despite the retirement of captain Tony Adams.

Upson was seen as a long-term successor to Adams when he became Arsene Wenger's first English signing in a 1m move from Luton in 1997.

Loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace helped bring him to the fore and he played 22 games for the Gunners last season, including six Champions League starts.

But a broken leg suffered against Everton in February set him back and the arrival of Sol Campbell and Patric Cygan has left him well down the Arsenal order.
