David Moyes believes Rangers are capable of causing an upset at Old Trafford

Everton manager David Moyes insists Rangers are capable of getting a result against Manchester United.

Walter Smith's side are gearing up for Tuesday's Champions League Group C opener at Old Trafford.

And Moyes, whose side drew 3-3 with United at the weekend, believes Rangers can take something from the game.

"In football at the moment there are a lot of shock results," he told BBC Scotland. "Things do happen in football and you can get a result."

Rangers secured two points from last season's participation in the Champions League group stage - both points coming away from home.

And the defending SPL champions will be keen to avoid defeat as their latest campaign gets under way at Old Trafford.

"United have got options all over the field," Moyes said.

Rangers are a really big football club who are used to these situations

"It's a difficult, difficult place to go. But, in saying that, Rangers are a really big football club who are used to these situations.

"It's nothing new for the football club, or for the Rangers players to handle."

In recent seasons, Rangers have performed impressively away from home in Europe with a series of commanding defensive displays.

And Moyes believes it would be a mistake for the side to abandon their defensive principles against Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"If he (Walter Smith) goes and plays two up front and they lose 3 or 4-0, then everyone will probably say he was too open and you shouldn't go to Old Trafford that way," he said.

Striker Wayne Rooney, who was a notable absentee from United's draw at Goodison Park, is expected to return to the starting line-up.

Rangers hope defender Steven Whittaker will recover from a calf injury, but Kirk Broadfoot (ankle) is doubtful.
