Rangers' Kenny Miller eyes improvement at Old Trafford

Kenny Miller admits Rangers will have to raise their game if the Scottish champions are to pose Manchester United any serious problems this week.

The Ibrox side travel south for their Champions League opener on Tuesday with their 100% domestic record intact.

But Miller says performance levels have not been matching the results.

"We'll be playing one of the best teams in the world, so we're going to really have to up it," the 30-year-old striker told BBC Scotland.

Miller scored his sixth Rangers goal of the season in the final minute of a substitute appearance in Saturday's 2-1 win over Hamilton as he continued his rich vein of form.

"If you ask the manager or any of our coaches, they'll tell you they're not happy with our level of performances so far in the first three of four games of the season," he said.

We know that, if we can go out and play our game, we'll have a chance of getting a result

"The manager will obviously decide what way he wants to go and whatever he decides will be best for the team to set us out to get the right result.

"If he decides to go 4-5-1, it is nothing new to us as we are used to it and we played some great stuff in the majority of games in pre-season using that system."

The former Wolves and Celtic forward has tasted the Old Trafford action before with Derby County and Celtic, losing on both occasions.

And, with with those experiences in mind, Miller reckons he knows what he and his team-mates will have to do in order to begin their European campaign with a flourish.

"You have to work your socks off for the 90 or 95 minutes and there's no doubt you have to carry a bit of luck along the way as well," he said.

"You can defend as good as you want for the majority of the game, but they're always going to create a chance in the match given the standard of player they have.

"It's a level that everyone in the dressing-room wants to be playing at and it doesn't come any bigger than playing Man United at Old Trafford.

"There's no doubt it'll be a really tough game, but we know that, if we can go out and play our game, we'll have a chance of getting a result."

Miller also scored Scotland's equaliser against Lichtenstein in the second European Championship qualifier at Hampden, ending a personal two and a half year international goal drought.

It was a drought of points at home that scuppered his club's chances of Champions League progress last season.

Stuttgart, Sevilla and a humiliating thrashing from Romanian minnows Unirea Urziceni meant Rangers had no chance of making an impact a year ago.

But those defeats were bookended by promising results in Germany and Bucharest and Miller is aiming to continue the club's decent form on the road.

"We got two points away from home last season with the two draws, so there's no doubt it was our home form that let us down last year," Miller added.

"If you speak to any team or any player, you have to build any kind of success on your home form and ours just wasn't good enough.

"Sometimes points away from home are viewed on as bonus points because it's always tough.

"But if we can get the home form right and still pick up the odd point up away from Ibrox then I think we'll be ok."
