Herfolge 0-3 Rangers

Rangers made huge strides towards the lucrative group stage of the Uefa Champions' League with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over Danish title-holders Herfolge.

Watched by a crowd of less than 5,000, Dick Advocaat's men outclassed their opponents and could have had more than the goals scored by Jorg Albertz, Rod Wallace and Lorenzo Amoruso.

After the game a content Advocaat said: "There were some excellent moments last night which showed the way we want to play, but we still have to improve. I have the feeling that Herfolge gave up at 3-0."

Fernando Ricksen, who was picked out by Herfolge manager John Jensen as a potential weak link in the Ibrox side, was left out of the starting line up and replaced by Sergio Porrini on the right side of the Rangers defence.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst filled the left back berth, while Albertz made a return to the midfield and Neil McCann joined Billy Dodds and Wallace up front in an adventurous formation.

The visitors had problems adapting to the tight pitch and several long passes frustratingly found touch in the early stages.

The Danes began the match in very cautious style and seldom committed men forward in numbers.

Blistering shot

Albertz was first to threaten the Herfolge goal when he let loose one of his trademark blistering shots from long range which flew just over the bar after 18 minutes.

Soon after, the ball broke to Dodds in the penalty box, but the striker snatched at the chance and allowed the goalkeeper to gather the ball easily.

Having warmed up and found his range, Albertz blasted Rangers in front with a magnificent swerving shot from 35 yards in the 28th minute.

Smart move

Three minutes later, the Scottish champions doubled their advantage when a smart move involving McCann, Dodds and van Bronckhorst culminated with Wallace sweeping the ball home at the near post.

Herfolge made a positive start in the second half in an attempt to haul themselves back into the match, but the Danish storm soon blew out.

Allan Johnston replaced the lively McCann 15 minutes into the second period.

Venomous free kick

Within seconds of the substitution captain Amoruso blasted home a venomous free kick to make it 3-0.

Kenny Miller was then given a taste of European football when he came on for Wallace.

Miller contributed immediately, setting up Dodds with a good chance. However, the striker's shot was blocked by the legs of the goalkeeper.

It was to be Dodds' last touch as he was substituted for Andrei Kanchelskis.

The Danes managed to muster a couple of useful attacks and Jacobsen and Schramm both had decent efforts on the Rangers goal without seriously troubling Stefan Klos.

Battled valiantly

Herfolge battled valiantly right up to the final whistle and Rangers rocked slightly in the face of attacking flurries from the hosts.

Klos broke the hearts of the home fans when he produced a wonderful save to deny a header from Jacobsen in the dying minutes.
