Steven Davis tips Danny Wilson for captaincy

Steven Davis thinks fellow PFA Scotland award winner Danny Wilson has the qualities to be a future captain of Rangers and Scotland.

Davis was player of the year in the Scottish Premier League while defender Wilson won the young player award.

"Obviously, at the minute he is quite a quiet lad, but you can see the way he conducts himself both on and off the pitch," said midfielder Davis.

"He could be a future captain for both Rangers and Scotland."

However, Wilson has attracted interest from English clubs, including Liverpool, and negotiations about extending his contract beyond next season have stalled.

And Davis hopes that the 18-year-old, who broke into the first-team this season, will remain at Ibrox.

I think there's still more to come from me

"The decision's really down to him," said the Northern Ireland international. "As a player and team-mate, I would obviously like him to stay here.

"At this club, there's room for him to improve and keep progressing and, at that age, that is the most important thing."

Davis was pleased to win the annual award, voted for by his fellow players, but thought he could still improve, especially in the goalscoring stakes.

"There's definitely room for improvement," he said. "I have only scored four this season and did not score until January.

"The only thing you can keep doing is getting in the right positions and keep on practising in training and, hopefully, it will come good for you.

"It means a lot for any player to get an award like this. It is always special to be voted for by your peers and players you are playing against every week.

"I think there's still more to come from me. You are always looking to improve as a player.

"Since I've been at the club, I think I've progressed each season and I'm obviously happy with the way things have gone this year."

All four players shortlisted for the award had been Rangers players: defender David Weir, striker Kris Boyd and centre-half Andy Webster, who has been on loan with Dundee United - and Davis thought there were more in his team who deserved recognition.

"I think, obviously, the first thing you look for in a season is success for the team," he said.

"We have managed to do that and you could probably add another couple out of our team in amongst the candidates, but it came down to the four in the end and I think that merits the success the team has had this year."

Davis was surprised that no Celtic players had made the shortlist and expected Rangers' Old Firm rivals to be fired up for Tuesday's Old Firm derby despite the Ibrox side having already retained the title.

"A lot of people are saying there is nothing to play for in this game, but at the very least there is pride and everybody wants to win them," he added.

"Any Old Firm game you play in is special."
