David Weir says Rangers future hinges on Walter Smith

Rangers captain David Weir says the future of manager Walter Smith will be key to whether the veteran defender extends his contract.

The 39-year-old's current deal expires in the summer but he hinted that he could be persuaded to continue playing.

"Given that the manager has played such a big part in the success here, I think his future will play a big part in a few people's decisions," he said.

Smith has been operating without a contract since it expired in January.

The Rangers manager, in his second spell in charge at Ibrox, has stated he is content to wait until the cash-strapped club find a new buyer before his future is clarified.

And Weir, who has been shortlisted for Scotland's Player of the Year award, hopes Smith remains in the dugout next season.

"When the season is over, the dust has settled and I know what the situation is with everyone, then I'll have a decision to make," he said.

"At this stage I feel fine and having played the majority of the games this season I feel good, but I don't know if that will change.

"Until next season I can't really answer that. Everything at the moment indicated that I would be okay but unless someone wants you to play on it is not really that important."

Former Everton and Hearts defender Weir was Smith's first signing when he became Rangers manager for a second time in January 2007.

Earlier this month, Smith indicated that he would be pleased if Weir kept on playing at the age of 40.

"We have an agreement where I speak to him at the end of every season and we see how each of us feels," said Smith on 2 April.

"I'll do that again this year, but you always get the impression, if everything is going okay, he could do another year. But we will just have to wait and see."
