Rangers striker search continues

Rangers chairman David Murray is hopeful the club can sign a new striker before Thursday's Champions League deadline.

Rangers have been searching all summer for a top quality front man and are ready to spend 10m on the right player.

They recently failed in a bid to land Belgian international Emile Mpenza, while the name of Diego Tristan has again been linked with a move to Ibrox.

Meanwhile, the transfer of striker Jonatan Johansson from Rangers to Charlton has been completed.

Murray has stressed that there has been no new move to bring Tristan to Ibrox, but the chairman is determined there will be a new face on board this week.

Tristan is currently embroiled in political turmoil at Real Madrid, having moved there this summer from Real Mallorca.

But that move was sealed under former chairman Lorenzo Sanz and Madrid's new chairman Florentino Perez insists the forward should not have been signed, according to the player's agent Francisco Duran.

"The president of Mallorca, Guillermo Reynes, told me Rangers phoned them asking about my boy," Duran told the Scottish Sun.

'Political reasons'

"He said Tristan does belong to Real Madrid at the moment because he signed a contract with Lorenzo Sanz.

"But now Sanz is no longer in charge, the situation is that Diego is not wanted at Madrid for political reasons."

One player definitely leaving Ibrox is Finnish international Johansson.

The striker completed a 3.5m switch to newly-promoted Charlton Athletic of the English Premiership.

The Finn was signed for 300,000 by Walter Smith three years ago but was unable to command a first team place.
