No Jim McColl cash for fans' Rangers takeover proposal

Rangers Supporters' Trust is working on a takeover plan
The Rangers Supporters' Trust has been advised by Jim McColl

Plans for a possible fans' takeover at Rangers have suffered a potential blow with the news that Jim McColl is not prepared to underwrite such a move.

Rangers Supporters' Trust is working on an "exploratory document" with the aim of taking over Sir David Murray's majority shareholding at Ibrox.

McColl, chairman of Clyde Blowers, confirmed to BBC Scotland he had been in talks with the fans' group.

However, he has no interest in any personal financial involvement.

McColl has built Clyde Blowers into a multi-national company with a turnover of £1.2b but he is reluctant to get involved in an area he has no experience in.

He remains supportive of the fans' plan but will restrict his role to financial advice.

A statement from McColl concerning his contact with RST read: "I gave them advice and input because we are pretty good at doing deals. We do a lot of deals and structure a lot of deals."

But he added: "I have no interest in buying Rangers or having financial involvement in Rangers.

"I am always happy to help. Glasgow has got two fabulous clubs. They are an important part of the community."

Rangers are closing in on the Scottish Premier League title and have already won the Co-operative Insurance Cup but are £31m in debt.

London-based property tycoon Andrew Ellis, formerly involved at QPR and Northampton, was this month revealed to be considering a bid for Rangers.
