Rangers not expecting to sell any players

Rangers manager Walter Smith
Smith hopes Rangers can hold on to leading scorer Kris Boyd

Rangers manager Walter Smith is hopeful he will have the same squad of players at his disposal for their title defence in the second half of the season.

Birmingham and others are interested in Kris Boyd, while Pedro Mendes has been linked with a return to Portugal.

However, Smith told the Ibrox club's website: "It doesn't look like there will be any movement.

"We've not had any enquiries for any of our players so far as I'm aware and I hope that continues."

Boyd is out of contract in the summer and Rangers are anxious to extend the prolific striker's terms.

Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain has been negotiating with the 26-year-old, while the player's agent has also held talks with Aston Villa and Wigan are monitoring the situation.

Last week, Birmingham manager Alex McLeish admitted it could be "possible to do some business" before the January transfer window closes.

But Boyd, who has scored 19 goals this season, is not expected to recover from a hernia operation until mid-February.

"With Kris, we're not any further forward," revealed Smith. "There is obviously continued speculation about what he might do but we just have to accept that.

"That's a problem for all clubs whose players go out of contract at the end of a season and we'll just have to see what happens.

"Certainly at this stage, we're just hoping we can get Kris back in the team over the next few weeks and then we'll take things from there."

Sporting Lisbon have not followed up their interest in Mendes with an offer.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who was named on the bench against Hearts at the weekend for the first time since suffering a knee injury back in October, has 18 months of his contract to run.

And last week he told BBC Scotland he was happy in Glasgow and only concentrating on regaining his place in the Rangers team.
