Rangers striker Kenny Miller loses dismissal appeal

Should Rangers appeal Miller red?

Miller has been suspended for clashing with Darren Dods

Rangers striker Kenny Miller will miss Sunday's Old Firm match after losing an appeal against his red card in Wednesday's 7-1 win over Dundee United.

Miller was ordered off by Willie Collum for violent conduct after a tangle with United defender Darren Dods at Ibrox.

The Scottish Football Association say Miller will serve a two-match ban starting with Sunday's game at Celtic.

Madjid Bougherra, Kevin Thomson, Steven Naismith and DaMarcus Beasley are also unavailable for Rangers.

Miller's dismissal took place in the 51st minute of the match when the score stood at 3-1 in the home side's favour.

He had won the penalty that started the rout at Ibrox and set up strike partner Kris Boyd for the third of his five goals.

However, the Scotland international undid his good work when he got tangled up with the United defender and Collum took a dim view of the incident.

If Kenny is suspended we are down to 16 players, so it leaves us short

Rangers manager Walter Smith

After the match, Rangers manager Walter Smith had said: "I had a quick look at it and I didn't think there was that much in it.

"If it's violent conduct, it certainly didn't look like very much at all."

League leaders Rangers have struck a rich seam of form in recent weeks, hitting 26 goals in their last six league outings and going seven points clear of Celtic, who have played a game less.

However, Smith is worried by the depleted nature of his squad ahead of Sunday's vital match.

"If Kenny is suspended we are down to 16 players, so it leaves us short," he added.

"We had Sasa Papac and Nacho Novo coming off because of sickness.

"The players we had listed tonight are the only ones available to us."

Meanwhile, Lee McCulloch's booking against United means he will miss Rangers' SPL trip to Hamilton on 16 January.

McCulloch's yellow card was his sixth of the current campaign and has resulted in a one-match ban.
