Rangers dealt Mendes injury blow

Rangers midfielder Pedro Mendes has been ruled out for at least two months with a knee injury picked up in Tuesday's Champions League defeat.

And defender Madjid Bougherra is also likely to miss the next two Scottish Premier League games with a knee problem that forced him out that match.

Mendes damaged his medial ligament in the 4-1 defeat by Unirea Urziceni.

Rangers have not confirmed the extent of the problem but say the duo will be missing in the "immediate future".

Mendes was injured shortly after his shot deflected off Ricardo Vilana to give Rangers an early lead against the Romanians at Ibrox.

The Portuguese managed to carry on until half-time but was then replaced with Kyle Lafferty as the Glasgow side headed for a bruising Group G defeat.

It is clear that Mendes will not feature in the next few matches at least, with a longer spell out a possibility

Rangers statement

Bougherra, who missed Saturday's SPL victory over St Johnstone on Saturday after returning late from international duty with Algeria, had been unable to start against Unirea.

"Mendes' injury is undoubtedly the more serious of the two, but the Rangers medical team will not know the full extent until later this week," said a club statement.

The 29-year-old Portugal midfielder was examined by a specialist after the match at Ibrox and will have scans, along with Bougherra, on Thursday once the swelling subsides.

"But it is clear that he will not feature in the next few matches at least, with a longer spell out a possibility," Rangers admitted.

Of Bougherra, their statement added: "The medical department are slightly happier with his condition, but he has no chance of playing this weekend and is unlikely for the following weekend either."

Bougherra has been Rangers' outstanding player this season, while the Glasgow side also rely heavily on the experience in midfield of Mendes, who arrived from English Premier League outfit Portsmouth for £3m in August 2008.

Hibs, who presently sit third in the table, would take over at the top of the SPL on Saturday should they win at Ibrox, with second-top Celtic not playing until the following day.
